Bondgate Tower, also known as the Hotspur Gateway, stands as a symbol of Alnwick’s rich heritage, dating back to the 15th century. Once a crucial component of the town’s defensive infrastructure, the tower now serves as a historical landmark, attracting visitors from around the world.
The wall and associated battlements were built under the auspices of Henry VI in 1433 and were eventually completed by the 4th Earl of Northumberland in 1480. Bondgate Tower was constructed around 1420 under the 2nd Earl of Northumberland, serving as a vital entry point into Alnwick and one of four gates granting access to the town. Today, only the eastern Bondgate Tower and the northern Pottergate Tower remain.
The gateways alternative name, ‘Hotspur,’ invokes the memory of Sir Henry Percy, son of the 1st Earl of Northumberland, known colloquially as Harry Hotspur, a legendary figure in English history. Knighted by three successive monarchs, Hotspur’s military prowess earned him renown, particularly in battles against the Scots, where his tactical acumen earned him his moniker. The Union of the Crowns in 1603 rendered the defenses redundant, with Bondgate Tower occasionally serving as a prison during the 17th and 18th centuries. As the years passed, Bondgate Tower faced challenges posed by time and modernity. The need to preserve its structural integrity and historical significance became paramount, prompting the requirement of the 3D modeling project.
The tower itself is composed of rough ashlar stone, with the east face featuring lookout slits and large central corbels presumed to support machicolations to aid in the defense of the archway below. The weathered remnants of a lion rampant are evident on a panel above the archway.
On the west face, there is a blocked-in cross window, with a two-light mullion window directly above the archway and additional blocked-in windows above it and to the right on the upper stage. Portcullis slits protect either side of the arch, with two small windows on the right allowing light into the internal staircase within the tower.
360 was commissioned to provide a photorealistic 3D model of the gatehouse to aid in repair, maintenance, and future conservation efforts. The project employed state-of-the-art techniques, including 3D laser scanning, aerial photogrammetry, and terrestrial photogrammetry, to capture every aspect of the tower with unparalleled precision.
This comprehensive approach ensured accurate documentation of both exterior and interior details. At the core of the project was a ground control network that would link the point cloud data and photographs to Ordnance Survey Datum, ensuring the spatial and positional accuracy of the composite model.
A thorough survey design and appropriate risk assessments were completed prior to the works to ensure that the drone flights and terrestrial survey workflows were carried out efficiently and safely. This included the closure of the road passing beneath the gateway to both vehicles and pedestrians. The use of the UAV also eliminated the need for access platforms and the risk of working at height. In total, the works for the interior and exterior of the gatehouse were completed according to plan within two days.
Laser scanning captured rapid and detailed measurements of the exterior elevations and the interior of the structure, accessed through a doorway within the archway. This data was combined with aerial and terrestrial photography to generate accurate orthophotographs of the elevations and roof, as well as floorplans of the interior. Additionally, a 3D textured mesh model was created, providing a high-quality digital asset. This allows the client or relevant third parties to inspect the entirety of the tower remotely and derive measurement information from it. This composite approach enhances the level of detail and accuracy in representing the structure.
The completion of the Bondgate Tower 3D modeling project represents a significant advancement in heritage conservation efforts. By embracing innovation and leveraging cutting-edge technology, we can ensure that our cultural heritage remains accessible and appreciated for generations to come.
